Celebrate Growth & Awareness This May
As we welcome the month of May 2025, it’s hard to believe we’re already five months into the year. This new month brings with it longer days, warmer weather, and so many opportunities for reflection, celebration, and connection. At Pediatric Therapy, May is a month full of joy and intention as we focus on children’s physical development and recognize meaningful national observances that bring our community together.
From National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day and Mother’s Day to Global Accessibility Awareness Day and Memorial Day, May offers moments to honor, support, and grow. And, of course, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and help your little ones thrive through purposeful play and movement.
🎉 Celebrating May: What to Look Forward To
May isn’t just about flowers blooming—it’s about recognizing the moments that matter. Throughout the month, we’ll shine a spotlight on four key observances:
-
National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day (May 8)
A chance to raise awareness about the importance of mental wellness in childhood and how caregivers and communities can foster supportive environments. -
Mother’s Day (May 11)
A special day to appreciate the incredible mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures who nurture and guide the next generation with love and strength. -
Global Accessibility Awareness Day (May 16)
A moment to educate and celebrate inclusive spaces that empower individuals of all abilities to navigate the world freely and confidently. -
Memorial Day (May 26)
A day of remembrance for the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. military.
Each week in May, we’ll be highlighting these days on our social platforms, and we invite you to follow along and join the conversation as we celebrate the causes that bring our community closer.
🧠 Focusing on Growth: Helping Kids Develop Through Play
In addition to honoring these special days, May is also about supporting your child’s growth—especially through everyday activities that improve fine and gross motor skills.
As therapists, we know that many kindergarten-readiness skills are physical—gripping a pencil, climbing stairs, or holding scissors. That’s why this month, we’re sharing practical, fun activities that you can do at home to help your child get stronger and more confident in their movement.
Fine Motor Skills (Small Movements)
Fine motor skills are the small movements of the hands, fingers, and wrists that are essential for everyday tasks like writing and self-care.
Here are some great activities to support them:
-
Playdough Creations
Roll, pinch, and mold playdough into shapes or letters. Add buttons or beads and encourage your child to push them into the dough. This strengthens finger muscles and builds dexterity. -
Stringing Beads
Use large beads and shoelaces or yarn. Your child can make a “necklace” or bracelet—this supports hand-eye coordination and concentration. -
Drawing and Coloring
Trace letters or shapes using chalk on the sidewalk or crayons on paper. Try vertical surfaces like an easel or window to strengthen shoulder and wrist muscles. -
Scissor Practice
Give your child safe, child-friendly scissors and practice cutting straight lines on construction paper or even straws. Start simple, then progress to cutting out shapes.
Therapist Tip: Teach scissors in small steps—first “snipping” paper, then cutting on straight lines, and finally moving to curves.
Gross Motor Skills (Big Movements)
Gross motor skills involve larger movements and muscle groups—like crawling, jumping, or balancing.
Try these activities to get your child moving:
-
DIY Obstacle Course
Set up a simple obstacle course in the backyard using what you have at home:
• Jump over pillows
• Crawl under a broomstick balanced on two chairs
• Balance on a line of painter’s tape
• Toss beanbags into a laundry basket
This fun circuit helps with balance, coordination, and core strength. -
Ball Games
Practice tossing a beach ball back and forth, or try soccer-style kicking between cones. These games develop timing, control, and spatial awareness. -
Bike or Scooter Riding
Perfect for balance and leg strength. Use training wheels or a balance bike for beginners. -
Simon Says with a Twist
“Simon says touch your toes, hop like a bunny, spin in a circle!” This classic game builds listening skills, body awareness, and memory.
🌿 Celebrating Moms, Mental Health, and Accessibility
In between the play and movement, we’ll be showing gratitude and awareness for all the roles that support a child’s development:
💚 National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day
May 8th reminds us of the importance of emotional health in childhood. We’ll be sharing tips for helping your child feel seen, heard, and safe—emotionally as well as physically.
🌸 Mother’s Day
Whether it’s a breakfast-in-bed celebration or a handwritten card from your little one, take time to honor the moms who do it all. We’ll be celebrating mothers on our platforms and encouraging families to share what makes their mom special.
🌎 Global Accessibility Awareness Day
This month, we reflect on the importance of inclusion. Accessibility is more than a ramp or a wide doorway—it’s about designing environments that welcome everyone. We’ll share examples of accessible toys, communication tools, and therapy techniques.
🇺🇸 Memorial Day
On May 26th, we remember and thank the heroes who gave their lives in service. Many families also use this long weekend to reconnect and enjoy quality time outdoors—don’t miss our tips on how to make outdoor play meaningful and developmentally supportive!
